Introduction

We explored the Brazilian Northeast: Barra Grande (PI), Lençóis Maranhenses (MA), and Jeri (CE) with enthusiasm and curiosity from the very first moment.
Among beaches, dunes, and crystal-clear lagoons, we lived unique and unforgettable experiences.
We are ready to share every detail of this journey filled with sun, adventure, and enchantment.

Why the Northeast enchants in any season?

Tropical climate, vibrant culture, and hospitality

The Brazilian Northeast is known for its year-round sun, a welcoming tropical climate, and a vibrant culture expressed in music, cuisine, and local traditions. From June festivals to beach forró, the region captivates with its authenticity.

Best time to visit and how to make the most of it

To enjoy Barra Grande and Jericoacoara, the period from August to December offers steady winds and mild weather. The Lençóis Maranhenses shine between May and September, when the lagoons are full and the landscapes breathtaking. Planning within these windows is key to a complete experience.

Barra Grande (PI): a haven of tranquility and kitesurfing

How to get there and where to stay

We arrived in Barra Grande via Parnaíba, then took buggy or 4×4 transfers on sandy roads. The village offers charming inns, many beachfront, and comfortable lodging for all types of travelers. We chose a beachfront pousada to wake up with the ocean breeze.

What to do in Barra Grande

Besides relaxing by the beach, we took kitesurfing lessons with experienced instructors. Nearby clear-water lagoons provide serene moments surrounded by nature. We also took a boat trip to Ilha das Canárias, snorkeling and spotting seahorses in warm waters.

Local gastronomy and experiences

Local cuisine surprised us with dishes like fish moqueca and crab stew, or tapiocas filled with authentic flavors. We enjoyed simple beachside restaurants and meals with fresh seafood. The hospitality of Piauí transformed every meal into a delightful experience.

Lençóis Maranhenses (MA): dunes, lagoons, and surreal landscapes

How to visit the park and the ideal season

We arrived via São Luís and continued to Barreirinhas, the main gateway to the Lençóis Maranhenses. The ideal time to visit is from May to September, when lagoons are full and the contrast between white sand and blue-green waters is magical.

Top tours and must-see attractions

We took the classic 4×4 tour to the Great Lençóis, stopping at Blue and Bonita Lagoons. In Atins, we explored thermal-water lagoons and toured mangroves. At sunset, the dunes turned golden, framing the horizon in unforgettable ways.

Barreirinhas, Atins, and Santo Amaro – which to choose?

Barreirinhas has solid tourist infrastructure and many tour options. Atins is quieter, perfect for relaxation and river windsurfing. Santo Amaro is more rustic but offers less explored landscapes. We chose to combine all three for different perspectives of the park.

Jericoacoara (CE): vibrant energy and natural beauty

How to get there and where to stay

We reached Jericoacoara via Fortaleza or Cruz, with transfers in 4×4 vehicles through dunes and sand. Our choice was an inn with a natural pool near Sunset Dune, where we watched the famous sunset over the sea.

Lagoons, dunes, and Brazil’s most beautiful sunset

We hiked or took a buggy to Paradise and Blue Lagoons, where we relaxed in hammocks inside the water and under palm trees. We climbed Sunset Dune to witness a vibrant sunset greeted with applause by all present.

Nightlife, sports, and a youthful vibe

Jeri surprised us with its laid-back atmosphere: beach bars play live music, caipirinhas flow freely, and forró heats up the nights. We took stand-up paddle classes at sunset and stargazed under a clear sky. The energy is youthful, welcoming, and truly authentic.

Practical tips for exploring the northeastern coast

Suggested itinerary and moving between destinations

We suggest a 10 to 12-day itinerary: start with Barra Grande (3 days), continue to Lençóis Maranhenses (4 days), and finish in Jeri (3-4 days). Overland travel and transfers ensure safety and local experiences. We booked early to secure the best prices and dates.

What to pack

Bring high-SPF sunscreen, hats or caps, light clothing, and comfortable sandals. A light jacket helps in breezy mornings. For dune walks, use sneakers or trekking sandals. Pack extra camera batteries or power banks to capture every moment.

Sun care, food, and sustainability

Stay hydrated and avoid sun exposure during peak hours. Choose restaurants that prioritize local products. We contributed to conservation by avoiding disposable plastics and respecting trails and protected areas.

A sunny journey: our experience in the Northeast

We lived an unforgettable journey through Barra Grande, Lençóis Maranhenses, and Jericoacoara. Each destination offered its own charm — from kitesurfing over calm waters in Barra, to the silence of lagoon-filled dunes, to hammocks swinging over crystal waters in Jeri.

We felt the warmth of the sun, the ocean breeze, and the generosity of the locals. The diversity of landscapes and rhythms left a deep impression on us. Our days were filled with relaxation, adventure, and connection with nature.

Choosing the Brazilian Northeast: Barra Grande (PI), Lençóis Maranhenses (MA), and Jeri (CE) means embracing sun, sea, and nature in its purest form. Now it’s your turn: plan your trip to these destinations and experience days of enchantment and sunshine.
